Hi Alan -- The four top places that folks seem to find old pieces are eBay, Craig's List, Family/A friend/Neighbor, or believe it or not, just on the side of the road or at the dump. Granted, the last two places are something you just luck into, while the first two will take active searching. The AA-151 is common enough that it shows up on eBay fairly often. Consider too that if a "parts only" unit has all the basic pieces in place (panels, controls, knobs) and is in good physical shape, and if the transformers are good in it, then a good tech should be able to restore it from there -- replacing pieces that would normally be replaced in the process of restoring an actual functioning unit anyway.

Good luck with your search. You would be surprised at how many folks want to recreate the system they grew up with. I hope this helps you find one to complete that system!

Hello, I came across this blog while looking for a Heathkit AA-151. My father built one in the early sixties and then threw it away in the 90's because there were no parts at the time for the unit. I have the receiver now want to see if I can find a restored Amp. Can anyone help or direct me to where I may start to look? Ebay has a couple but they are parts only. Thanks in advance.

Dave,

It was a pleasure meeting with you the other day. Give me a call at the shop in Ball Ground when you get a minute.

Thanks,

Bob

Thanks for your interest! I hope I am understanding your question correctly, so please let me know if I have not.

In both cases (i.e. the SCA-35 and Heath AA-151), all distortions tests were all made at 1db below rated power output, so the tests would remain in keeping with those used to produce the original published specifications. Therefore, with the SCA-35 tests, the before and after distortion tests were made at a consistent power level between tests, since the "rated" power level did not change. The power output figures shown illustrate the increased maximum power output available at the onset of clipping, as a result of the EFB modification.

I hope this helps!

With the EFB mod installed how would the distortion figures compare, running at the same power output as the both channel measurements? Wouldn't that comparison be useful? The bump up of a couple watts is nice to know the figures improve (2 out of 3) but I'd bet that at the same wattage out, the modded figures might show the improvement is significant too?
